Use this interactive demo to learn how to build and manage a Gantt chart in Asana from scratch.

Quick summary

Asana's Gantt chart view lets teams visualize project timelines, assign tasks, set date ranges, and identify the critical path — all within a single project. This step-by-step demo shows how to create a Gantt project, link task dependencies, and highlight time-sensitive milestones directly in Asana.

Steps

  1. Click the Create option to add a new project to the list.
  2. Select Blank project to start a new project from scratch.
  3. Name your project, choose Gantt as the default view, then click Create project.
  4. Click Add task to begin populating your Gantt chart with work items.
  5. Rename the section to match your project's structure or phase.
  6. Click the assignee icon and assign the task to a team member.
  7. Click on a task card to set a date range for that task.
  8. Click Add section to create a new column or project phase.
  9. Create subtasks to add further detail and granularity to any task.
  10. To link a dependency, left-click the dependency icon and drag it to the next task.
  11. Confirm that a red line appears, indicating the tasks are now dependency-linked.
  12. Open Gantt options to access advanced chart settings.
  13. Select Highlight critical path to flag tasks whose delay would impact the total project duration.
  14. Verify that a yellow line appears, marking the critical path across your Gantt chart.

📌 Why this matters

Asana's Gantt chart view gives project managers a visual way to plan timelines, assign ownership, and track task dependencies in one place. By highlighting the critical path, teams can instantly identify which tasks must stay on schedule to avoid delaying the entire project. This makes Asana's Gantt feature essential for cross-functional teams managing complex, deadline-driven work. It replaces static spreadsheet timelines with a dynamic, real-time project schedule that keeps everyone aligned.
