Use this interactive demo to learn how to build a Kanban board inside Notion from scratch.

Quick summary

A Kanban board in Notion is built by creating an inline database and switching its layout to Board view. You can then add a Select property to define columns, populate cards, and drag and drop items across stages to manage workflows visually.

Steps

  1. Create a new page in Notion and enter a title for your project.
  2. Use the slash command (/database) to search for and insert an inline database.
  3. Enter a name for your new inline database.
  4. Click the three dotted icon in the top right to open database options.
  5. Click on Layout in the options menu.
  6. Select the layout type Board to switch to Kanban view.
  7. Click the cross icon to close the layout panel.
  8. Click on the new cards to expand and edit their content.
  9. Click the + Add a property button to add a new database property.
  10. Select the Select property type to enable category-based grouping.
  11. Enter a name for the new Select property.
  12. Hover over any unwanted property and click the 6 dotted handle to access its options.
  13. Select Delete property to remove it from the database.
  14. Confirm by clicking Delete — this removes the property from all items.
  15. Click on the empty space under the Select property to add new options and categories.
  16. Enter a name for your new option or category to add it as a column.
  17. Continue adding more options to create additional Kanban columns.
  18. Use the (+) button from the board view to add more cards directly to a column.
  19. Note that any property added to one item is automatically available for all items.
  20. Drag and drop cards between columns to update their status on the board.
  21. Your Kanban board inside Notion is now fully set up and ready to use.

📌 Why this matters

Building a Kanban board in Notion lets teams visualize and manage tasks within the same workspace they already use for notes, docs, and wikis — eliminating the need for a separate project management tool. Notion's Board view, powered by a flexible inline database and Select property, makes it easy to create custom workflow stages like To Do, In Progress, and Done. The drag-and-drop interface means updating task status takes seconds, keeping projects moving without friction. For individuals and teams looking for a lightweight, all-in-one productivity solution, a Notion Kanban board is one of the fastest ways to bring structure to any project.
